It’s not too late for Hurd to speak out

Does Rep. Hurd realize that President Donald Trump has gone to Mar-a-Lago almost every week – six times – since the inauguration? Trump loves his own golf courses. Fine. But why is it that Trump feels that only he can work at home?

Worse yet, each visit to Mar-a-Lago costs taxpayers about $13.6 million (according to the nonpartisan General Accounting Office). That is a total of $81.6 million so far. The yearly total will be huge.

I wonder if Rep. Hurd is curious about other ways to spend that $81.6 million? How many child care workers, fire fighters, and park rangers could be hired with that money? Hurd refuses to attend town meetings so we don’t know. OK. Now that he has some free time, perhaps he can do some fact-finding on ways to serve, rather than cut, his constituency.

Rep. Hurd writes (Herald, Mar. 9) that it is a privilege to serve his home district. Great. Start serving. As of now, it seems that Hurd votes however Trump orders him. Cut Medicaid and food stamps? Yes, sir! If Hurd has any independent ideas, he is yet to voice them.

I hope that he finds his backbone. It is not too late for Hurd to speak out for the 3rd district. All citizens will respect Hurd when he follows his own path.
