It’s time to adopt sensible gun laws

Another day and another school shooting in America. The Santa Fe High School shooting marks the 22nd school shooting where someone was hurt or killed this year, the third in eight days.

When will we commit to protect our children by becoming gun-safety voters and voting those who are beholden to the gun lobby out of office? As we mourn the victims of the latest mass shootings in Texas, let’s not forget the gun injuries and deaths of young people that occur each and every day, one by one, in our cities and towns, and dedicate ourselves to finding REAL solutions, not platitudes like “thoughts and prayers.”

Congress knows how to solve this problem; all it takes is a little bit of courage – the courage to stand up to the gun lobby, the courage to do what’s right. Let’s pass some common-sense gun-safety laws like the Red Flag law that passed the Colorado House only to die in the Senate. And let’s hold those who lack the courage to protect their constituents responsible for their failures.

Come to the WearOrange Rally from 2 to 3 p.m. June 3 at Buckley Park and join your fellow citizens to honor victims and survivors of gun violence and to promote community outreach efforts to save lives and encourage gun safety.
