Jeep and gravel truck collide

No injuries reported in accident on U.S. 160

There were no visible injuries in a Jeep/ gravel truck collision Wednesday afternoon just west of Bayfield on Highway 160, according to Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Ben Steger, but the highway was closed for almost an hour.

The state patroll received the call at 12:57 p.m. Steger said a gold Jeep driven by 20-year-old Merry Nickerson of Bayfield was westbound on 160, followed by a semi-truck returning from delivering gravel to the highway work east of Bayfield. Nickerson tried to do a U turn at the County Road 502 intersection and collided with the front passenger side of the semi. Steger said Nicckerson apparently hit her head, although there were no visible external injuries. She was cited for careless driving.

The semi ended up crosswise on the highway, closing it until around 1:50 p.m. The semi was owned and driven by Patrick English, 68, from Durango. He wasn't injured.

Steger said both drivers were using seatbelts. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
