A Durango man has been arrested on suspicion stealing a Jeep last week from the Durango High School parking lot.

Clinton Davidson, 32, is accused of taking the vehicle May 11 while the owner was away on a school trip to Colorado Springs.

The 2006 red Jeep Rubicon was reported missing the next day. The Durango Police Department located the Jeep on Sunday in the Walmart parking lot.

The Jeep’s ignition had been punched, or damaged, and several pieces of stolen property were found in the backseat, according to a news release issued Thursday by the police department. Surveillance video suggests Davidson was the last person to exit the vehicle.

Davidson does not have a permanent residence but has lived in the Durango area for several years, according to the release. He was booked in the La Plata County Jail on suspicion of felony motor vehicle theft.

At the time of the theft, the Jeep had a soft top, but the doors were locked and the keys were with the student.

Anybody with information about the theft is asked to call Durango Police Detective Chris Thomson at 375-4732.
