In past years, I haven’t known enough about the more “minor” offices, like our Colorado secretary of state. But this year, it’s critical we all find out about and vote on these candidates, who will have far-reaching impacts on our daily lives.
Our current secretary of state, Wayne Williams, was only one of three secretaries in the U.S. to provide our voter data to President Trump. He’s opined it’s “not just wrong, it’s scary” that his Democratic opponent would have defied the Trump administration on this infringing request.
Williams’ office also testified against SB18-075, a Colorado bill to institute campaign finance limits for school board elections, which are notoriously flooded by Koch Brothers money.
Here in La Plata County, Williams affected the recent recall of our county commissioner, giving the petitioners multiple opportunities – and extra weeks – to collect signatures. Ultimately, that recall failed.
In this year’s midterm elections, our vote is essential to protect our democracy: we must vote against an overreaching Trump Administration, big corporate money in politics and dark web hacking. Jena Griswold is a far better choice for secretary of state: she was a voter rights attorney for the 2012 Obama campaign, ensuring all voters’ voices were heard. She then served us as director of the Colorado governor’s Washington, D.C. office, where she secured federal disaster recovery funding in the wake of the devastating 2013 floods.
Jena has spent her career fighting for us all. That’s why I support Jena Griswold for Secretary of State.
