Joel Jones honored at Fort Lewis College board meeting

Fort Lewis College honored President Emeritus Joel Jones several years ago by renaming Sage Hall as Jones Hall. Following his death this summer, the Board of Trustees remembered him at its meeting Friday with a plaque presented to his wife, FLC Professor Emerita Rochelle Mann, and daughters, Jocelyn Strauss and Cammie Nichols.

The presentation included personal remembrances from Peggy Sharp, the board’s deputy secretary, outgoing Chairwoman Karen Wilde, and incoming Chairman Steve Short.

A copy of the plaque, which includes a photo and one of Jones’ poems, will be installed in Jones Hall at a later date.

“I think they ought to put a pedestal under the plaque with a book on it because Joel always had a book with him,” FLC spokesman Mitch Davis said. “If someone takes the book, that’s great, we’ll put out another.”

Jones was president of the college from 1988 to 1998, a period that included the construction of the Community Concert Hall.
