Tuesdays: Weekly activity kits for children and teens. Kits include supplies for one child to complete a project. Available for preschool, elementary and teenage levels. Each Tuesday, a new activity kit is released, and they are available while supplies last. Stop by during open hours to pick one up. Tails and Tales summer learning program preview: For June and July, Pine River Library will host two months of animal-themed fun for their “Tails and Tales” Summer Learning Program. The program includes drop-in activities for families, craft programs for teens, live animal visits and a beginning fly-fishing class. All events will be held outside with proper safety measures. The library will also host a “Mammal Madness” competition throughout the summer, with different animals battling it out each week and participants filling out their brackets along the way. Participants get an entry to the drawings for every activity they complete, including completing take-and-make kits or attending a program, committing an act of kindness, doing the StoryWalk and reading a book. Story Craft Bags – Harry Potter: Care of magical creatures with Hagrid. Pick up a kit and start caring for magical creatures.

Grab-and-Go Bags – Bird Nest Build. Build the perfect bird’s nest. Pick up binoculars and get a close up look at real nests.

STEAM Learning Checkout Kits. Pick up binoculars or an archery kit. For ages 3 and older.

Growing Readers Together – Sound Walk. Literacy kits for caregivers of 0- to 5-year-old children. The June topic is exploring the sense of sound.

Take-and-make kits: “Speakers,” June 1. Tie together sound, amplifiers and art into a portable sound system to boost a smartphone’s speakers with an animal decoration twist. “Dancing Snakes,” June 15. Build a snake out of tissue paper and then give it a jolt of (static electric) life. Watch it dance around as its movements are controlled with a balloon.

“Program in a Bag” kits. Pick up a free “Program in a Bag” kit. The “Birdhouse Kits,” June 1, and “DIY Hummingbird Feeders,” June 15. Paint constructed birdhouses from 3 to 6 p.m. June 18 at the library. Paints and brushes will be provided.

PRL PineCast. Updates about library programs, pitches for library staff members’ favorite books, the “Ask a Librarian” segment and Southwest history. All month: Fall Community Fruit Harvest apple tree signup. Register a backyard apple tree for the fall harvest run by PineRiver Shares and Bear Smart Durango. Signing up a tree earns entry to win prizes.

June 4, 10 a.m.: Rambling Readers: Meet at the gate to Saul’s Creek just off U.S. Highway 160 in Bayfield on the first Friday of every month, take a gentle walk and discuss favorite pandemic reads and other topics. For directions, call 884-2222, ext. 1.

June 4, 3 p.m.: Kid’s Planting Day. Plant a section of the Children's Bed of the Library Garden and watch seeds grow all summer.

June 5, 8 a.m.: Friends of the Library Book and Yard Sale. All proceeds benefit the library.

June 8, 11 a.m.: Teen Crafting, Pressed Plant Bookmarks. Make a bookmark using natural elements and decorate it with washi tape and stickers.

June 9, 1 p.m.: Spanish conversation in person. Practice Spanish in an informal setting. All ages and language levels welcome.

June 9, 2 p.m.: Bookmarks Book Club in person. Open to all adults. The library provides the books, a discussion leader and a place to gather outside. The June book is “Home Before Dark” by Riley Sage. The July book is “Becoming” by Michelle Obama.

June 15, 11 a.m.: Teen Park Day, Frisbee Golf. Join Becky in the Library Park for some Frisbee golf.

June 18, 3 p.m.: Painting Day. Paint rocks to take home or leave for decoration in the Library Park. Paint take-and-make birdhouse kits as well

June 16, 6:15 p.m.: Library’s Board of Trustees meeting.

June 19, 9 a.m.: Bird Feeder Exchange. Hosted by Bear Smart Durango. Bring old bird feeders and in return receive a complete kit (basket, soil, wildflower seed) for making a hanging flower basket to attract birds. Sponsored by Lewis True Value Mercantile.

June 22, 11 a.m.: Teen Crafting, Solar Printing. Using sun-sensitive paper, lay out patterns of feathers, leaves or sticks and expose the paper to the sun. Then design a frame to make a wall hanging.

June 23, 1 p.m.: Spanish conversation in person. Practice Spanish in an informal setting. All ages and language levels welcome.

June 29, 11 a.m.: Teen Park Day, Cornhole/Washers. Join Becky in the Library Park for classic yard games.

New Programs

One Book, One Community Read Program. Schools, families and the community will read Katherine Applegate’s 2013 Newbery Medal-winning book, “The One and Only Ivan.” The goal is to teach parents and adults to engage thinking strategies in children by reading aloud together, cultivating a lifelong love of books. Each family will receive the book, as well as these local organizations: Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H clubs, La Plata Youth Services, Boys & Girls Club and Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Funded by a $3,000 grant from the American Library Association: Libraries Transforming Communities.
