A fun and exciting (but not scary) program where kids will come face-to-face with a Great White Shark. We will get a “behind-the-scenes” look at how Wayne and Karen Brown form the Ocean Adventure search for and dive with Great White Sharks.

Tuesdays, 4-5 p.m.: Youth Chess Club. Drop-in chess games in a friendly environment. Meet fellow enthusiasts, improve your game and enjoy friendly competition. For ages 9+. All skill levels are welcome.

Wednesdays, 11-11:30 a.m.: Preschool Storytime. Stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities. Perfect for children ages 3+.

Thursdays, 11-11:30 a.m.: Toddler Storytime. Stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities. Perfect for children ages 1-2.

Thursdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m.: Teen Game Zone. Ages 12-17.

Fridays, 11-11:30 a.m.: Baby Time. Tailored for babies from birth-12 months together with their favorite adult. Enjoy 15-20 minutes of early literacy activities followed by a playgroup. Sing songs, bounce to action rhymes and share stories, providing a rich environment for babies to hear language and interact with others.

June 3, 10-10:45 a.m.: Stories in the Park. Join Durango Parks and Recreation and Durango Public Library the first Tuesday of each month for a free, family friendly, outdoor storytime and nature journaling adventure. Recommended for ages 3-7 with a favorite adult. These programs will be held at Santa Rita Park picnic shelter at 111 South Camino del Rio. If the weather’s iffy, Stories in the Park might move indoors. In case of rain, snow, extreme cold/heat, etc. on the day of the event, call at 375-3380 to see if we’ll be at our usual spot under the picnic shelter at Santa Rita Park or cozied up inside at an alternate location.

June 3, 6-7:30 p.m.: Book Club: “We The Animals,” by Justin Torres. Register at the reference desk, then join us to discuss the book at the library. A free book is available for the first 15 people who register and attend. Planning ahead? Our July book will be “Calling for a Blanket Dance,” by Oscar Hokeah (books available six weeks before meeting date). Preregistration required.

June 4 and 18, 6-7:30 p.m.: Word Honey Poetry Workshop. Free poetry workshop – come write and create original works with us! All are welcome.

June 10, 6-8 p.m.: Drag Makeup 101. Explore the art of drag makeup with local drag queen Aria PettyOne. In this hands-on, interactive workshop, participants will learn a brief history of drag and the basics of contouring your own face and eyebrows. Patrons must be 17 and older to register for this event. No experience necessary. Supplies provided. Preregistration required.

June 11, 6:15-7:45 p.m.: Writers & Scribblers Writing Group. W&S is a group for writers of all kinds to learn, practice and share the art and craft of writing. Our main purpose is to try to help each other through the maze of things you must do as writers; from writing to editing and on to publishing and marketing your books, short stories, essays or anything else. Discussion topics will vary and sometimes repeat depending on the needs of the members at the time.

June 12, 4-5:30 p.m.: Crafternoons. Come make enchanting paper flowers to beautify your space or give as gifts. We’ll follow simple patterns to create lovely floral arrangements – delicate yet sturdy, and so colorful! All materials provided. For adults only.

June 12, 6-8 p.m.: Colorado’s Amazing Bumble Bees and How to Help Them. Learn about the unique life cycle and adaptations of these amazing creatures. Hear more about conservation issues and what can be done to help, including how the Mountain States Bumble Bee Atlas is using citizen scientists to help conserve bumble bees, one photograph at a time.

June 14, 1-3 p.m.: World Wide Knit in Public Day. Yarn lovers, gather with us! Let’s create community and visibility around the craft we love. Join us to knit in the lobby or out in front of the library, depending on the weather. Interested in learning to knit? We’ll have someone to teach you on hand. Plus, there will be free yarn for the taking.

June 17, 4:30-6 p.m: Climate Café. Climate Cafés are a space to share thoughts and feelings about the climate crisis in community. Climate Cafes are not action oriented; they’re not about shifting the outcome or figuring out what to “do.” Rather, they’re an opportunity to build an ecosystem of community, to cultivate resilience and to continue to meet the unknown future from a place of connection – to self, community and Earth. June 17, 6-7:30 p.m.: Non-traditional Book Club: Queer Writing. Join us at Bread’s downtown location (135 E. Eighth St.) for a “nontraditional” book club, where the discussion is based on a genre/topic rather than a specific book. There’s no required reading for these “nontraditional” book clubs, just a topic/genre to discuss and plenty of delicious snacks. In celebration of Pride Month, we are discussing queer writing. Preregistration required.

June 21, 1-2 p.m.: Folk Jam. Join us for an informal “jam session” of traditional and contemporary folk music. Bring your voice and/or an instrument (if you play one). Share the songs you know and learn new ones. Everyone is welcome, even if you just want to listen, but be ready to have a good time! Led by local educator and folk musician Dennis Lum.

June 23, 4-5:30 p.m.: Death Café. A Death Café is a group directed discussion of death; it is not a grief support group. Our objective is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives. Facilitated by Lola Montano, local hospice nurse and trained death doula.

June 25, 4:30-6 p.m.: Great Garden Series: Permaculture: A Total Approach to Home Gardening with Heather Houk. Presented by the Durango Botanic Gardens, CSU Extension Office and Durango Public Library. For full event details, visit www.durangobotanicgardens.org/events.

June 28, 1-3 p.m.: Silent Book Club. An hour of dedicated reading. Socialize after, or not. How it works: B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Book) or grab something new off the shelf and read alongside other readers. There are no assigned readings. All book genres and formats are welcome.

June 28, 1-3 p.m.: Yarn Meetup. Calling knitters, crocheters and fiber artists of all ages and levels. Come work on your current project in an informal group setting.

Color Our World: June and July. Register the whole family for our all ages Summer Learning Program, which is jam packed with all sorts of excitement for every age, including special events, a storywalk, prize drawings and programs for all ages.

FOL Book and Yard Sale: Saturday, June 7, 8 a.m.-noon. The Friends of the Pine River Library have sorted through stacks of books to sell their best picks. In conjunction with Bayfield Yard Sale Day, the Friends will host a book sale that will also include a yard sale event in the parking lot of the library. All proceeds from the designated Friends of the Library tables benefit the library. In addition to the Friends of the Library sale, there will also be community members selling their own items in the parking lot. Contact the library to rent out a parking space for your yard sale items.

Bookmobile Visits: Every Monday in June and July. Dewey, Ignacio Community Library’s Bookmobile, is visiting Bayfield on Mondays in the summer! Look for Dewey at the Bayfield Elementary School at 10 a.m.; the Vallecito Church at noon; and Forest Lakes at 2 p.m. Each location visit will last an hour. New: Playful Pals: Connect, Play, Explore, Mondays, 10-11 a.m. Drop in to connect with other families/caregivers and foster a playful environment for preschool-aged kids. Coffee, tea, healthy snacks and a play space are provided.

StoryQuest, Thursdays, 11 a.m. Read books, meet new friends and make a craft together.

Kids

ColorQuest, Mondays, 11 a.m. Special activities each week. Unleash your creativity: tie-dye, paint and create. This program will be held in the library park, weather permitting. Younger children may need assistance with projects.

Bayfield Kids’ Snack Pack Distribution, Tuesdays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. All kids can pick up a free snack pack in the library. This program is sponsored by local churches, the town of Bayfield, Pine River Shares and the Friends of the Library. It is hosted by Bayfield students.

WorldQuest, Wednesdays, 11 a.m. Get ready to snack, explore and be inspired. Each week, we will create something from a different part of the world paired with a fun snack. This program will be held in the library park, weather permitting. Younger children may need assistance.

Colorful Critters, select Fridays, 11 a.m.-noon. Fun animal visits for all ages. See monthly event pages for specific dates in June and July.

Teens (grades 6-12)

Teen D&D, Mondays, 1-3 p.m. Roll for initiative. New members are welcome, and no experience is necessary, but you will need to set up a character before you can join the ongoing campaign. Reach out to kelly@prlibrary.org to schedule a time for that.

Teen Gaming, Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m. Dive into a variety of gaming experiences – whether it’s intense board games, console battles or digital adventures in Roblox, Minecraft and more.

Teen STEAM & Dream, Thursdays, 1-3 p.m. This hands-on series features weekly workshops, creative challenges and interactive projects that spark curiosity and innovation. Explore, create and connect with fellow teen innovators. Check the event pages for a June special event.

Weekly Programs
Mountaintop Movement Fitness Classes

These classes are hosted by local fitness instructors Brian and Tammy Williams. Follow them on the Mountaintop Movement Facebook page for more information.

Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-9 a.m. Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all body parts. The free classes are always similar in style but use different moves to keep it fun and fresh. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels are welcome. Weather permitting, all classes are held outside now for the summer.

Yoga For All

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:15-10:15 a.m. In this informal, free meetup, we create awareness and harmony between the mind and body that allows us to remove stress and anxiety. We use our breath to move deeper into our body while warming, lengthening and strengthening our muscles. All you need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged.

Friends of the Library Shed Book Sale

Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m. Weather permitting, stop by the shed in the library parking lot for our weekly popup book sale.

Community Knitting and Crochet Group

Sundays, 2-4 p.m. All are welcome! Whether you have been knitting and/or crocheting for years or you would like to learn, we are happy to have you and will do our best to help you get started.

Program calendar

June 2, 6-8 p.m.: Typeset Writers’ Group. No rules, just writing. Each month, a member of the group will bring an article for discussion. Participants also have the option to bring two pages of their own writing to read aloud, but it’s not required. If you’d like to read your own writing, bring it in manuscript format.

June 3, 5:30-6:30 p.m.: Miniature Woodland Houses. Use your imagination and natural materials to create miniature woodland houses. They’re perfect for magical creatures such as fairies, gnomes and dragons. We will provide all of the supplies, and there is no cost to you. With local artist Louise Medved. June 9, 6-8 p.m.: Classic Movie Series with Dennis Taylor: “Swiss Family Robinson” (1960). A family sailing to New Guinea is shipwrecked on a deserted island. With the ship beyond repair, they have no option but to remain on the island. Together they create a home on the island, but plenty of adventure awaits in the form of wild animals and pirates.

June 10, 6-7 p.m.: Yarn Bombing Party! Where crafting meets street art. Join us for a relaxed, colorful gathering where you can learn to crochet, hang out with crafty folks and create collaborative art. No experience? No problem! Crochet designer and author Susan Kennedy of Pretty Peaceful will be on hand to teach you to crochet the chain stitch. Supplies provided – just bring your creativity and good vibes. If you’re already a knitter or crocheter, bring any scraps, swatches or failed projects to transform into community yarn bombing material. Together, we’ll crochet a garland and yarn bomb some chairs – a joyful explosion of fiber art in public space. All ages are welcome, but recommended for ages 8 and up for maximum joy and minimum frustration.

June 11, noon-1 p.m.: Container Gardening. Do you have extra plants and no open garden space? Want to add plants to a patio or inside spaces? Learn to create a container garden with a Pine River Garden Club Master Gardener. From planting in the right spot to soil health to pest management – blend your choice of plants to create a beautiful container.

June 11, 2-3 p.m.: BookMarks Book Club: “The Women.” The library provides the books, the discussion leader and a place to meet each month. Stop by the front desk today to check out your copy of this month’s title: “The Women,” by Kristin Hannah.

June 12, 10:30-11:30 a.m.: Kaffeeklatsch! An hour of German conversation on the second Thursday of every month. Meet others who have ties to Deutschland, to the German language and want to practice their skills. Bis bald!

June 12, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.: Learn Over Lunch: The Making of an Adequate Fly Fisherman: Mostly True Storytelling and Photos from Decades of Fly Fishing. Hear Bayfield resident Ken Gaherty talk about his decades of personal fly fishing experience, including many years teaching the sport in the New York State Parks system. Gaherty is the author of “The Making of an Adequate Fly Fisherman: Memoirs of an Angler.” He will speak to our Learn Over Lunch participants, showing photos from years of adventures, telling stories and answering any questions. Registration is required. Call or stop by the library to sign up. A catered lunch will be provided, so reserve your meal.

June 12, 1:30-3:30 p.m.: Community Music Makers. Local musicians of all abilities and instruments (including voice) are welcome to join us every second Thursday of the month. We share our songs and love of music of all kinds. Bring your instrument and a few copies of what you want to play and share. We usually go around the circle and each person shares a song with others joining in. Do not be intimidated: We truly are of all ability levels!

June 10, 10-11 a.m.: Card Making at the Pine River Senior Center. Create two beautiful handmade cards. Free.

June 13, 11 a.m.-noon: Colorful Critters: Wolfwood Visit. Wolfwood will bring its outreach program to the library park. Learn all about wolves, wolf rescue, rehabilitation and preservation.

June 13 and 27, 4-5:30 p.m.: Beginning Mahjong Meetup. Mahjong is a tile-based table-top game developed in 19th century China. Similar to the Western card game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and luck. It is entertaining to play and, like dominoes, is relatively easy to learn. All are welcome.

June 13, 20 and 27, 6-11 p.m.: 4 Corners Tabletop Night. A place for tabletop gamers in the Four Corners to meet up and get their miniatures to the table. We play a variety of games and welcome players of all skill levels. We strongly encourage joining our Discord Server for event information, hobby inspiration and tabletop chat. June 17, 1-2:30 p.m.: Death Café. Pine River Library is one of many groups in 79 countries across the world that host Death Cafés, a time and place where people come to share food, drink tea or coffee, and discuss death openly and honestly. The aim is to increase awareness about death in order to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.

June 18, noon-1 p.m.: Cookbook Club: Strawberries, Rhubarb, Salad. Each month, we’ll gather together and share a potluck of recipes from a chosen cookbook, chef or cuisine. Stop by the library and pick up a copy of that month's cookbook and then call or email Joanna to RSVP and let us know what recipe you’ll be making for the potluck (884-2222, ext. 517, or joanna@prlibrary.org). In June, we will focus on strawberries, rhubarb and salad recipes.

June 18, 5:30-6:30 p.m.: Colorful Craft Night: Mini Canvas Paintings. Create colorful mini masterpieces to take home or to display in our Community Art Show. We have tools to assist anyone comfortable sketching their own outlines. These crafts can be messy, so don’t wear your favorite T-shirt.

June 19, 1-3 p.m.: Teen Snack Around the World. Perfect for foodies, snack lovers or anyone who just wants to try something new (and maybe a little weird!). Come hungry and adventurous!

June 20, 11 a.m.-noon: Colorful Critters: 4-H Meet & Greet. An exciting and educational 4-H Show and Tell event where you will get to meet 4-H members and animals. Whether it’s a dairy goat, a clever herding dog, a companion rabbit or even a fancy show chicken, this event is a fun way to learn about animal behavior, care and the many ways animals help people every day. Perfect for families, animal lovers and anyone curious about the 4-H animal projects.

June 21, 1-3 p.m.: Self-Defense 101 with Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Shiann Swapp. Learn the basics of self-defense in this engaging two-hour class, taught by Shiann Swapp – a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt and experienced Kickboxing and BJJ instructor at Durango Martial Arts Academy. This class is intended for teens and adults.

June 23, 10 a.m.-noon: Discover Your Story: Drop In Genealogy Help Session. Pine River Library and Genealogical Society co-host a drop-in help session for family history enthusiasts. Whether you’re just beginning your genealogical journey or seeking guidance on additional resources and organization techniques, this session is for you. To maximize your time, bring a completed Ancestral Chart, available at the library front desk. This is free and open to all.

June 23, 6-7:30 p.m.: Movie Trivia Night at Lost Goat Tavern. Do you speak fluent “Mean Girls,” quote “Lord of the Rings” at family dinners and believe “Die Hard” is absolutely a Christmas movie? Then grab your nerdiest friends, your weirdest film facts and your most dramatic Oscar speech voice – it’s time for Movies Trivia Night!

In June, learn about Chaos Gardening, the modern twist to nature’s spontaneity. From beginner gardening projects to front yard revitalizing projects, Chaos Gardening invites gardeners to scatter garden seeds without a plan and watch nature’s inherent randomness take center stage. CreativiTEA. A meetup for crafty and creative people. Bring a portable hand craft you’re working on or need help with and tap into the community of crafters for inspiration. Check the calendar below for the dates and times at your local library.
