Three juniors outclassed their senior teammates Monday at the first varsity golf tournament of the boys season.
One week before school will resume, the Durango High School boys golf team traveled to Grand Junction for a round at Bookcliff Country Club.
Juniors Lucas Robbins and Kobe Szura each shot a 10-over-par 81, while their fellow junior Robby Grogan signed for an 82.
Seniors Cory Gillespie and Eric Walker were right behind the juniors, with Walker shooting an 83 and Gillespie scoring an 84 in his first varsity round of golf since elbow surgery in November.
“Lucas, Kobe and Robby posted good rounds. Hopefully they can keep doing what they did (Monday) when we play again (Tuesday),” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “Our two seniors, they’ll tee it up again (Tuesday), and hopefully they will find their stride a bit more.”
Low scores could be had at the relatively short 6,632-yard, par-71 course.
Fruita Monument’s Troy Dangler was the medalist with a 7-under 64 in his school’s home event.
“He’s been one of the better players the last couple of years, and he shot lights out (Monday),” Rawles said. “Bookcliff is not that long of a course, and you have a lot of wedges in your hand. Still, that’s probably the lowest score I’ve seen since I’ve been coaching.”
Trevor Olkowski of Grand Junction High School wasn’t far off Dangler’s pace, as he shot 68. Montrose’s G.M. Mihavetz was third with a 1-under 70.
Durango’s team score of 244 was good for eighth out of 18 teams. Grand Junction won with a 224, and Steamboat Springs was second at 225.
Teams will be back in action again Tuesday at Redlands Mesa Golf Course.
