Katie Stewart is young people’s and Southwest Colorado’s next champion

Christina Soliz

You know we’re close to an election when every commercial is a political ad. With Nov. 5 rapidly approaching, it’s important that people in Southwest Colorado know that there’s an opportunity to empower a local leader who is already doing the work to keep our community a great place to live. In House District 59, we can elect someone who knows how to navigate the Western Slope’s diverse political spectrum while maintaining her values: Katie Stewart, a fourth-generation Durangoan and current Durango School District 9-R board member.

It’s not her first rodeo: Katie is a proven rural advocate who is already on the ground working to lower the costs of living for young renters and parents and protect our essential freedoms. She is the only candidate in the race who supports protecting the freedom to access abortion care and Amendment 79. We know that protecting reproductive freedom is one of young people’s top issues – and that includes expanding access to health care for rural Coloradans. We also know that young people are issue-motivated voters who have turned out to protect abortion rights before and are primed to do so again on Nov. 5.

As someone who cares for her family of seven, Katie has firsthand experience understanding the importance of public education, housing that’s actually affordable, and the differences between surviving and thriving. Her priorities are our priorities: We all want to spend less on rent and invest more in our schools; we all want to do what we can right now to create a more equitable and affordable community. She deeply understands the issues young people face and is committed to finding pragmatic solutions that are rooted in fairness.

At Young People for All People, we’re elevating New Era Colorado Action Fund’s work organizing and mobilizing young people to elect Youth Agenda Champions because we’re tired of people politicizing our issues without delivering on any solutions. We deserve a community where reproductive care is accessible and an economy that actually helps everyone. The power is already in our hands to turn our vision of the world into reality: we can vote for Youth Agenda Champion Katie Stewart in House District 59.

It is never too late to register to vote in Colorado; just stop by a Voter Service Center near you to register to vote, update your registration, or solve any election-related issue before Election Day. Remember: your vote is your voice, so return your ballot or be in line by 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5.
