Playing against the best competition brings out the best in Durango’s Katrina Chandler.
Paired with some of the top players from the Farmington area, Chandler had the best golf round of her career Monday at the Aztec Municipal Golf Course at Hidden Valley. She shot a 92 during Monday’s round at the par-70 course in Aztec
That result placed Chandler third at the tournament.
“Without ever seeing that course, the uphill and blind shots and weird rolls and side-hill lies and the funky things going on with it, it was a pretty good test,” said DHS head coach Kirk Rawles. “For all of our players to shoot career lows was great.”
All of the Demons played their career-best rounds Monday. Lauren Biery shot 102 and finished fifth in the field. Taylor Edwards shot a 102, Faith Mewmaw signed for 114, and Quinn Griswold finished with 130.
As a team, the Demons finished third behind Kirtland Central and Aztec.
“Our biggest goal right now is just to keep figuring out how to play the game,” Rawles said. “They more they go out and play, they’re actually shaving quite a few strokes off and understanding how to score.”
Durango won’t host a tournament this year. Next week, the Demons will travel to Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction fro the Southwestern League Championship. All five of the Durango players who traveled to Aztec will make the trip.
“We could have four girls shoot in the 90s by the time we get to regionals in Craig this year,” said Rawles, who is encouraged by the youthful team’s hard work.
