While Alamosa and Pagosa Springs captured many girls soccer league honors, locally, Bayfield had one standout named First Team All-League in junior Savannah Kaufmann. She netted a team-best 16 goals in earning not only the Wolverines' Golden Boot award, but also Team Varsity MVP and CHSAA First Team All-Academic distinctions.
BHS senior Lenka Doskocil was also First Team All-Academic, in addition to being BHS' most valuable defender and recipient of a new team salute, the Wolverine Character Award. She was also a second team/honorable mention All-League choice, as was Ignacio senior defender and midfielder Ryley Webb.
Bayfield went 5-10 overall, 4-7 against all league opposition and 1-5 against its 3A members this spring, while Ignacio finished 0-14, 0-14, and 0-10 (against the league's 2A side) respectively.
Also named to the IML second team are:
Center sophomore goalkeeper Giselle Almeida, PSHS junior forward/midfielder Alyssa Lewis and junior defender Isabelle Pajak, M-CHS senior Cassidy Leonard, Telluride senior midfielder/goalie Ava Jodlowski and freshman forward/midfielder Samantha Morrell, Ridgway junior Hadassah Gates, AHS junior Katy Gallegos and Crested Butte Community School's Tess Fenerty.
Senior defender Isabelle deLuca and senior goalie/midfielder Whitney Wells represented THS on the First Team, after the Miners reached the second round of the 12-team Class 2A State Tournament, ultimately losing to Littleton-based Front Range Christian.
THS finished 11-4-1 overall, 9-2-1 versus the full league and 6-1-1 against its 2A side.
Pagosa Springs senior midfielder Hayley Mitchell and senior defender Addie Thompson were also named First Team, as were RHS sophomore Finn Doherty and junior Emma Haaland after the Demons also reached the 2A State Tournament's second round, ultimately losing to Denver Christian and finishing 10-5-1 overall, 9-3-1 in league (7-1-1 versus the 2A side).
Montezuma-Cortez senior Rylee Lindsley knocked in a reported 11 goals in 2017, earning her a First Team All-League nomination, and CBCS sophomore Rachael Potoker rounded out the leading honorees, having netted nearly a half-dozen goals as a forward and having prevented many more as a goalie in helping the 2A Lady Titans log six victories and a tie in their first official varsity season.
Had Alamosa been fortunate to hang on to the #24 spot in CHSAA's RPI index-used to seed non-automatic qualifiers into the Class 3A State Tournament bracket-the 3A/2A Southwestern, a.k.a. Intermountain League's Player-of-the-Year selection would have been a non-issue.
Junior forward/midfield machine Katie Parkins logged a devastating 42 goals in AHS' 14 total matches but had to settle for a First Team All-League nomination when postseason honors were recently released, playing something of a second fiddle to Pagosa Springs' Hannah Marnocha.
Marnocha is set to play at Cabrillo College in California this fall. The senior forward/midfielder topped the 20-goal mark and helped the Pirates finish 13-4 overall and reach the Tournament's second round. There, their season ended via a lopsided loss to The Academy of Westminster, the eventual state champions.
Prior to a first-round state win over Sterling, Pagosa went 10-1 versus the whole 3A/2A SWL, and 6-0 versus its 3A side-both managed in no small part due to the contributions of Goalie-of-the-Year Diana Scott, a sophomore, and Coach-of-the-Year Lindsey Kurt-Mason-during the regular season.
