Kayaker rescued Saturday in Cascade Canyon

Man suffered minor injuries in Animas River

A crew from La Plata County Search and Rescue retrieved a kayaker Saturday afternoon after he suffered minor injuries in the Animas River in Cascade Canyon.

Butch Knowlton, director of the La Plata County Office of Emergency Management, did not know the name of the man who was injured, but he said the man suffered only slight injuries.

La Plata County Search and Rescue was assisted by crews from the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Tall Timber Resort to bring the man to Durango, Knowlton said.

The man had a GPS device and the signal was picked up by Search and Rescue, assisting in locating him, Knowlton said.

Knowlton said he believed the man’s injuries were minor and the man was going to meet with friends in Durango after the incident.

Knowlton did not have any additional details about the kayaker or about the incident that led to the rescue.
