A number of years ago, an old friend critiqued Durango’s music scene, insisting that what happens here musically is subpar to just about anywhere. I disagreed then, and I’ll disagree now. Especially since another KDUR Cover Night happened Feb. 15, as 16 bands came together to play the music of REM. It was fantastic, and proof that the Durango music scene is in fact, awesome. While this is a fundraiser for the place that employs me, and I come to this event as an organizer, I’m also a fan of the music and the bands performing said music. I’m proud to call them friends.
So, on behalf of the staff of KDUR-Radio and Fort Lewis College, I’d like to say thanks again to all of the bands that performed at REM Cover Night, as well as the many bands that wanted to play but couldn’t: 30-some bands just can’t fit into one night of music. I’d also like to thank the staff of Animas City Theatre; Brian and Jeff of Music Masters; Jimmy of Jimmy’s Music; and Scott “Scooter” Smith, as this event wouldn’t happen without them. Concerts don’t fall from the sky – it takes a team of musicians, sound engineers, venue and on-stage staff.
Thanks to everyone who attended as well. The Durango music scene is quite fertile, productive and flat-out great!
