For the 16th year, KDUR community radio station will be gathering the community together for its Furniture As Art Auction.
Being held Thursday at the Durango Arts Center, it’s the radio station’s biggest fundraiser outside of its weeklong membership drive, said Station Manager Bryant Liggett.
But what also makes Furniture As Art cool, Liggett said, is the fact that it’s not only a fundraiser but a community event as well that includes a variety of people – from the furniture being made by local artists and auctioned off by local auctioneers, to the live music performed by Fort Lewis College students, to food provided by Chuck Norton.
Liggett says there will be about 20 pieces in the live auction, some of which are on display around town, including at Animas Trading Co., Maria’s Bookshop, Eye.D. Eyewear and in the lobby at the Strater.
And the artwork is eclectic: Check out the stained-glass game board table by Janet Kenna, the flower-shaped stool by Tom Hahl, and a collaboration between Maureen May and Blake Crouch called “Treasure.”
“In these questionable times of funding being cut to arts and media, it’s good to get out there and support the people that make media and make art,” Liggett said. “This is important: It’s stuff like this and people like this that make a community cool.”
