Keep DHS skiing tradition alive

Durango High School has a long tradition of being one of the best ski teams in the state. From the early days of racing under Dolph Kuss, Walt Jackson and Jerry Davis that produced Fort Lewis collegiate champions, Colorado high school state champions and Olympians from Durango to the latest Durango Demon state champion, Toby Scarpella, winner of the Colorado high school giant slalom in 2020, Durango High School skiing needs a coach to keep the tradition alive.

Before the X-Games and free-ride skiing, slalom and downhill along with Nordic skiing were how the best skiers in the state were determined.

Ski hills like Chipmunk Hill, Hesperus, Purgatory and Calico Hill produced not only Colorado high school champions, Durango High School also produced many great collegiate and Olympic skiers as well.

Because of past Durango 9-R ski race programs, I developed a lifelong love of skiing that I have passed on to my children. Coach Taylor from Smiley and Coach Stangby from Miller had an incredible impact on a generations of ski racers from Durango public schools.

Durango High School is in need of a head coach for the DHS ski team. Please reach out to all of your skier friends and family that you don’t need to be an ex-Olympian or NCAA ski racer, just a person who is willing to pay it forward to the next generation of skiers to continue the great tradition of ski racing in Durango 9-R schools.

Go Demons and think snow,

Jim Creek
