With all the pressures of the citizens for careful spending of taxpayers’ money, why will the city be spending $2.16 million on Chapman Hill ski area this coming year?
It does not appear that the ski fees sustain the anticipated $75,120 cost to run the ski hill, let alone adding another $2.16 million to the hill.
With all of my travels past the hill two to four times a week, I see very few skiers. This is another drain for taxpayers, where recreation trumps repair and maintenance of real city services.
Chapman Hill ski area is another non self-sustaining and non-profitable venture, like the failing transit system and Lake Nighthorse (only afloat by grants and inter-fund transfers). They’re paid by all taxpayers but enjoyed/used by a few.
On a separate note, big thanks Barbra Bell and John Simpson on their persistent voices on the city’s spending and tax proposals.
Please go to the city’s website for the “Organization Chart for the City of Durango” and you will see that “Durango Citizens” are listed at the top of the chart! Please voice your concerns with editorials, writing to the city Councilors (emails on city website) or by attending public meetings, even if you are given an absurd three minutes to speak!
