Kid friendly Snowdown events to kickoff

The Durango Public Library will host two Snowdown events for children and families Jan. 31.

The Durango Public Library is offering two special Snowdown events for children and families at the end of the month, according to a city of Durango news release.

The first “Snowdown Preschool Dance Party” will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 31 with kid-friendly dance music and surprise giveaways.

Kids are welcome to wear comfortable costumes, or just come as they are and decorate steampunk top hats, provided while supplies last, the release said.

This event is open to all young children and their caregivers. Registration is not required.

The third-annual “Snowdown Bristlebot Races” also will be held Jan. 31. The event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m.

Kids and teens, eight to 17, can build their own tiny racing machines out of toothbrushes, batteries, and vibrating cell phone motors, the release said.

Participants will be able to race their creations for prizes.

Prizes and certificates will be awarded to the fastest and funniest “bristlebots” in two age categories: 8 through 11 and 12 through 17. Costumes are encouraged.

There is no cost to participate, but advance registration is required, the release said.
