Kim Boekbinder bringing genre-busting music to Durango

It’s hard to put a finger on exactly the kind of music Kim Boekbinder makes – it spans just about every type (except rap and heavy metal, she says) and even includes music made from the sounds of space, courtesy of NASA.

So it’s pretty cool that she’ll be playing April 28 at the Henry Strater Theatre.

“I love going to new places and finding people who already have a connection to my music,” says Boekbinder, who lives in New York City. “It’s one of the best feelings.”

Boekbinder has developed her fan base by forgoing the usual record company route and blazing her own social media path.

“What we saw is sort of a fracturing of the old power structures in the music industry in that it used to be more top-down; labels were deciding who to put money into and who to release, and basically, who gets promoted dictates who you end up liking or even getting to listen to,” she says. “The internet opens that all up. And now we have access to everything ... and that’s really exciting because it also meant a whole bunch of new voices that record labels wouldn’t take a chance on were being heard.”

As well as a strong online presence, Boekbinder also knows how to put on a live show.

“I’m very theatrical also just naturally,” she says. “There will be stage projections – light projections, videos my partner makes for me and they’re really beautiful. It’s visual and sonic and definitely a journey through two albums: One is a journey through space and the other is a journey through ritual.

“There are loud songs, songs you can dance to, there are quiet songs, there are songs that are kind of making a cultural statement, some of them are just fun.”
