Kirtland holds the line for victory

Wiegert’s big night can’t lift DHS girls basketball to a W in N.M.

Strong free throw shooting by Kirtland Central sunk the Durango High School girls basketball team Tuesday night in Kirtland, N.M.

The Broncos made 17-of-18 free throws en route to a 48-43 victory.

“Every time we fouled them in the second half, it was two points for them,” DHS head coach Nancy Smith said.

Katie Wiegert led the Demons with 20 points on 4-of-4 shooting from behind the 3-point line.

DHS (2-5) lost its third consecutive game and first game since returning from Christmas break.

The Demons still are playing without several regulars, but Smith expects to have close to a full squad for the team’s next game Saturday at Piedra Vista.

“Those who are there have really stepped up their game,” Smith said. ”Our press was much stronger; we got a lot of steals from them and deflections.”
