The Kiwanis Club of Durango announced new officers for 2016-17.
Incoming officers are Robert Whitson, president; Scott Shadid, president elect; Charlotte Pirnat, past president and lieutenant governor for District 18; Chris Carney, treasurer, and Sweetie Marbury and Judy Michalski, secretary.
The club meets at noon each Thursday at the Durango Recreation Center.
Kiwanis members raised more than $20,000 to be donated to the children of La Plata County with the Pancake Day held in September at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. The Bill Mashaw Golf Tournament raised more than $5,000 for community projects.
The club donated to the Durango Youth Soccer Association, La Plata Youth Services, Adaptive Sports, Boys and Girls Club, Project Merry Christmas, Fort Lewis College softball team, Florida Mesa Imagination Library, Tri-County Head Start summer scholarships, La Plata County Family Center, Durango High School After-School Prom, Manna Soup Kitchen, Durango High School Key Club, Volunteers of America Safe House, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the FLC Kiwanis Scholarship/Joseph McKinley Scholarship Fund.
The Kiwanis Club sponsors Kiwanis/Alpine Bank Safety Day for second graders, Child ID, judges at the San Juan Regional Science Fair, reads at Reading is Fundamental Head Start, participates in the Dave Spencer Adaptive Sports Ski Classic, participates in the Salvation Army bell ringing, and contributed $20,000 for the new Kiwanis Pavilion at the Whitewater Park.
