Kiwanis discuss history of whitewater adventuring

A Kiwanis luncheon talk will be held at noon Thursday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave., to reflect on the past hundred years of whitewater adventuring.

The guest speaker will be Kent Ford.

The history of whitewater canoeing and kayaking has as many twists and turns as the canyons its pioneers explored. It’s a story of unexpected influences, such as building boats in friend’s basements, experimenting with new designs and materials, and even bribing dam keepers to release water.

The event is open to the public.
