Know the Snow Fund, a local nonprofit dedicated to increasing avalanche awareness and education, will host the second annual Know the Snow Rando Race at Purgatory Resort from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday.
This year’s race is dedicated to the memory of Bert Perry and Jeff Paffendorf, Durango community members and experienced backcountry enthusiasts who recently died in an avalanche outside of Silverton.
Race proceeds will benefit the Know the Snow Fund avalanche scholarship, which was set up in memory of Joe Philpott and Peter Carver to increase accessibility of avalanche awareness and education to all ages. This season, the fund awarded more than 19 students fully paid entrance to a Level 1 or Level 2 avalanche course at Silverton Avalanche School. The Rando Race is the nonprofit’s biggest fundraiser of the year.
The race will comply with all of Purgatory’s COVID-19 policies. Early registration before 4 p.m. Saturday is strongly encouraged as racer capacity is limited. The race offers two courses, a 13K option and an 8K option. Prizes will be awarded for the fastest male/female, best dressed (costumes encouraged), youngest and heaviest set up. All levels of experience are welcome.
