Kristin Smith for 9-R school board – because we need change

I have been looking closely at the race for the 9-R school board. I have been on a school board, taught at the university level, am the parent of a child with special needs and am a substitute teacher in the district.

I wish both of these women could be on the board. Both bring many strengths to the table.

I have known Stephanie Moran for years. She has always been responsive to any questions that I have had. I consider her a friend. But with that said, I am writing to support Kristin Smith for the school board.

I know there is a pretty steep learning curve for a new member. I went through that. I also know that as a parent and educator, school board members who have been volunteering in the schools have seen the day-to-day operations firsthand, and have made many friends among teachers and parents, invaluable to the decision-making process.

While the education process in 9-R schools is very successful for most students, there are still gaps that need to be filled so that all children get the very best education possible.

School administrators in general tend to see things as top-down, creating more administrative positions, which leaves less money for hiring teachers, aides and various service positions.

It is time to change that.
