The passing of Fred Kroeger is a major loss not only personally but for the Durango community. I worked with Fred for 40 years on water issues, especially the Animas-La Plata Project. As one of my friends said, “next to my parents, Fred had the greatest influence on how to live my life.” The work he did for the community is enormous, from ALP to Fort Lewis College, to giving his time to numerous local, state and national boards. Fred had a joke to start every meeting; some made you groan, but you laughed anyway. Fred was also the last of the group of leaders that I grew up with in the water business that included Leonard Burch, Sam Maynes, John Murphy, Art Isgar, Doris Brennan, Stella and Chano Montoya, Bob Taylor and Lawrence Huntington. The community is far better for their vision and dedication. I am a better person for having known all of them, especially Fred.
