Kudos for our local, independent news

Like many of my friends, I regret not being able to walk out to the mailbox every morning to pick up my daily Durango Herald (coffee doesn’t quite taste the same without it).

At a time when many small newspapers are not surviving at all because of decreasing subscription and advertising revenue, and many larger ones are being swallowed up by syndicates, hedge funds and competitors, we are lucky. We can count on local news, editorials, and letters-to-the-editor to give us a good sense of what is happening in our corner of Colorado.

I want to know what my fellow citizens think about local issues, both those I already care about and those I’ve never even considered. I would miss stories and editorials like these:

“Public art for U.S. 160/550 needs to be everything the Arc of History was not” “Cost savings achieved through [Durango’s] transit [service]” “[La Plata County] 4-H council shapes young leaders” “FLC’s Renner runs to cross country nationals” “In dry region of La Plata County, reservoir extends growing season” “Big oil and gas behind county commissioner attacks” “Montezuma orchard project receives grants totaling $120K” “Bayfield to open Twin Bridges” “Sen. Gardner holds fate of arctic refuge”All of these headlines and subheadlines appeared in the Weekend, Nov. 18-19 edition of The Durango Herald.
