Kudos to McBride for bringing stories to life

When I caught The Durango Herald’s story on the Elkhorn fire, I was blown away by Jerry McBride’s photos documenting the fire and our firefighting heroes who face the danger on our behalf to save property and lives (Herald, Jul. 27),

As a photojournalist myself, I photographed the devastation from fire in Orange County, California many years ago, From the skeletal remains of lost homes, to the charred landscapes and watersheds that will take years to recover, I can truly appreciate McBride’s own courage in joining the firefighters to tell the story as it’s happening. Wildfires can get a trifle unpredictable, especially if the winds kick in, thus increasing the danger to photographers, as well as the firefighters.

So, kudos to Jerry McBride, the Herald’s long-standing photojournalist who’s brought this, and so many stories to life with his images.
