La Plata County 4-H members are set for a year of extraordinary experiences, embarking on journeys that promise to shape their futures and broaden their horizons. From competing on the national stage to exploring international agriculture and attending a premier leadership conference, these young leaders are seizing opportunities that highlight the best of what 4-H has to offer.
In March, a group of La Plata County 4-H members will travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the National 4-H Ignite Conference. This unique event offers workshops and hands-on activities in STEM, agriscience, community engagement and physical and mental health. Attendees will participate in dynamic sessions designed to spark creativity and innovation, such as using pollination to teach problem-solving, how AI will impact our future careers, and brainstorming solutions for real-world issues. They will also meet with industry leaders and career mentors who will provide insights into pathways to success in various fields. Beyond the educational opportunities, attendees will tour iconic landmarks, and witness the vibrant history and culture of our nation’s capital. The conference is not just a learning experience; it’s an inspiring adventure that will empower these young individuals to see the endless possibilities of positive change they can bring to their communities.
One of our outstanding shooting sports members, Shane Elworthy, has earned the incredible honor of competing at the 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships this June in Nebraska. Shane qualified for this prestigious event through his exceptional performance in the 0.22 Rifle category at the Colorado State Fair. As he represents La Plata County and leads the Colorado 4-H Shooting Sports 0.22 Rifle Team, Shane will engage in rigorous competitions against the nation’s best. The championships also provide opportunities to build camaraderie with fellow competitors, exchange tips and techniques, and explore future prospects in shooting sports and related disciplines. Shane’s journey exemplifies the discipline and perseverance fostered by 4-H programs.
Adding to the excitement, four exceptional 4-H members will embark on a life-changing agricultural tour of Italy and France this June. Over nine days, these members will explore diverse farming practices. They will visit family-owned farms and large-scale agricultural operations, gaining firsthand knowledge of how European farmers balance tradition with innovation. The tour includes cultural experiences, sampling world-renowned cuisines, and engaging in language exchanges with local farmers and hosts. This immersive journey will provide a global perspective on agriculture, broadening their understanding of food systems and inspiring new ideas to bring back to their communities.
These travel opportunities underscore the mission of La Plata County 4-H to provide life-changing experiences that foster personal growth and leadership. The dedication of families, volunteers and sponsors has been instrumental in making these adventures possible. These trips are not just about the destinations but also about the lessons, skills, and memories that will shape these young individuals for years to come.
As these young leaders prepare to represent La Plata County on local, national and international stages, their achievements reflect the hard work and values that define 4-H. Stay tuned for updates on their journeys and successes throughout the year. The future is bright for La Plata County 4-H, and we can’t wait to see what our remarkable youth will accomplish next.
