La Plata County has officially adopted its overhauled comprehensive plan, ending a three-year process to update the plan, which hadn’t been revised since 2001.
The La Plata County Planning Commission voted unanimously last week to approve the plan. On Wednesday, members of the planning commission presented a report to La Plata County commissioners.
According to Planning Commission Chairman Jim Tencza, the comprehensive plan is an advisory – not regulatory – road map to guide county decisions on growth.
He said with 38,000 new residents expected to move into La Plata County over the next 30 years, the comprehensive plan will also serve as a foundation for planned updates to the land-use code.
Tencza said special attention was given to agricultural use, as well as tourism, recreation and historic preservation.
La Plata County spokeswoman Megan Graham said the state gives the authority to planning commissions to craft and certify comprehensive plans, and it does not require county commissioner’s formal approval.
