Martha Johnson was appointed as La Plata County’s director of human services on Jan. 4, succeeding Lezlie Mayer, who retired from the department Jan. 3 after 35 years.
Johnson recently celebrated 25 years with the La Plata County Department of Human Services and has served as assistant director since 2007.
Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Carleton College and a master’s in social work from the University of Denver, with a concentration in children, youth and families. He is a licensed clinical social worker and certified child welfare supervisor.
In her capacity as assistant director of the Department of Human Services, Johnson coordinated the agency’s regional programs, working in collaboration with agencies throughout the area to deliver services for children, youth and families.
She has been active at the state and county levels in developing and implementing the Colorado Child Welfare Practice Model and revising the structure of the Colorado Child Protection Ombudsman’s Office.
