La Plata County appoints new human services director

Martha Johnson to lead after 25 years in department
The La Plata County Department of Human Services at 10 Burnett Court recently gained a new executive director, Martha Johnson, who has worked in the department for 25 years, and as the assistant director for the past decade.

Martha Johnson was appointed director of the La Plata County Department of Human Services this month, after working 25 years in the department, including 10 years as assistant director.

Johnson enters the position as a licensed clinical social worker and certified child welfare supervisor with an undergraduate degree in psychology from Carleton College and a master’s in social work from the University of Denver with a concentration in children, youth and families.

As assistant director, Johnson coordinated programs with agencies throughout the region to benefit children and families, working at the state and county levels to develop and implement the Colorado Child Welfare Practice Model.

Before joining the county Human Services Department, Johnson was a child protection supervisor and caseworker.

“We’re so fortunate to have a leader of Martha’s caliber to step in as director of the Department of Human Services,” County Manager Joe Kerby said in a statement. “Her expertise, integrity and compassion embody the values and mission of the agency and will serve its clients and the community exceptionally.”

Johnson’s predecessor, Lezlie Mayer, retired Jan. 3 after 35 years with the department.
