La Plata County must restart its search for a new county manager after contract negotiations with its finalist fell through four months into a hiring process that appeared to be nearing its end.

John Cattles, assistant county manager for Gunnison County, was named the sole finalist and underwent a final interview in late August.

The Board of County Commissioners extended an offer on Aug. 29, but negotiations ended this week without a hire.

According to a county news release, “both parties amicably decided not to pursue the county manager appointment.”

County spokesperson Ted Holteen said details of the decision will likely remain unclear.

“We can’t really say anything more about negotiations that never came to fruition,” he said.

Cattles could not immediately be reached for comment.

Commissioners had hoped to hire a new county manager this month. A plan to continue the search will be discussed Friday in executive session.

Holteen said he could not comment on whether interim County Manager Kevin Hall will remain in the role during the extended search.
