La Plata County gets it right

Thank you, La Plata County Commissioners and others involved in the recent actions taken to enforce reasonable land-use regulations for Unit 3 of the Forest Lakes District. These actions are significant for the entire area. Enforcing rational development and wildfire mitigation guidelines protects us all – particularly as drought and rising temperatures increase threat levels.

While all of us would like to “do what we want,” environmental conditions are forcing us to acknowledge that common sense standards serve the common good. Enjoying the beauty of the Southwest depends on living forests and healthy ecosystems. Protecting those protects our Southwestern way of life.

I commend the La Plata County Commissioners and staff members, the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District Chief and the San Juan National Forest for tackling the difficult issue of enforcing reasonable development standards. Elected officials too often go without credit for addressing thorny problems. As a La Plata County resident, I am grateful for these forward-looking actions.
