La Plata County Humane Society awaits renovation contest results

Winner to be announced “on or before” April 15

Online voting for a contest that could bring a $50,000 renovation to the La Plata County Humane Society ended Sunday, but it may take up to two weeks to learn who won.

The La Plata County Humane Society was one of five finalists from across the country in the running for a renovation through Animal Planet’s TV show, Pet Nation Renovation.

The humane society was selected after submitting a three-minute video tour of the shelter, 1111 South Camino del Rio, detailing the needs of the 20-year-old building.

Voting ended Sunday at midnight, but the humane society’s executive director, Michelle Featheringill, said it states in the contest rules that the winner would be announced “on or before” April 15.

“We will absolutely let everyone know,” Featheringill said Monday. “Everybody was so great, the entire community was so supportive.”

Other shelters in the contest included two in California, one in Michigan and another in Texas.

The TV show and crew would start the renovation project between May and July, Featheringill said, and the show would air sometime in the fall.

Representatives with Animal Planet did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday morning.
