A La Plata County man is suspected of stabbing and nearly killing his father last weekend at a mobile home park about 7 miles south of town.
Andrew Aarvold, 25, was arrested Tuesday – four days after the alleged assault – in Weed, California, according to a news release this week from the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office. He is being held on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder.
The stabbing occurred Jan. 5 at the Old Homestead Mobile Park, 8659 U.S. Highway 550, near Sunnyside Elementary School, according to an arrest affidavit filed in La Plata County Combined Courts.
Law enforcement first learned of the incident at 3:05 p.m. when a neighbor, Faye Gooden, called the Sheriff’s Office to report that Brad Aarvold pounded on her door before collapsing outside the home. He told her to call 911, adding, “Andrew stabbed me.”
Ronna Russi, a different neighbor, told deputies Aarvold said he had been stabbed 10 times, but she believed it to be more.
Aarvold suffered multiple stab and puncture wounds to his chest, ribs and back, as well as defensive wounds on both hands, according to the affidavit. He was rushed into emergency surgery at Mercy Hospital before being flown to a trauma center in Lakewood.
No weapon was found when officers conducted a sweep of the home, but it was later discovered that Andrew Aarvold had attempted to purchase a firearm at Colorado Gun Fighters, less than an hour before the assault, according to the affidavit.
JJ Roauanzin, owner of the pawn shop, told investigators an employee refused to sell Aarvold a gun when he answered “yes” to question on a federal form about whether he is under indictment or is a military member facing charges.
The employee told an investigator that Aarvold wanted to purchase the cheapest 9 mm revolver the shop carried and displayed no emotion during the interaction, according to the affidavit.
