The dreaded task of renewing one’s motor vehicle tags may soon become a painless process that can be done in minutes.
La Plata County Clerk and Recorder Tiffany Parker said the county intends to install a kiosk this year, possibly as early as spring, that will allow residents to complete the vehicle registration renewal process 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Vehicle owners could pay with credit cards, e-checks or cash, and print tags at the kiosk.
“We’d be one of the pilot counties for this,” Parker said. “We’d install one, and eventually, if it goes well, we could have two.”
Like an ATM, there would be a $3 fee to cover the cost of the kiosk. Residents also would have the option to renew their documentation the old-fashioned way.
Parker expects the kiosk to be popular and consequently eliminate much of the manpower necessary to process renewals.
“It would be zero cost to the county, because we’re a pilot. The state would do all the installation, all the programming,” Parker said.
Machines were installed in Arapahoe County, and they’re common elsewhere, including in Arizona.
Parker said the first in La Plata County would be located at the clerk’s office.
The county would use the kiosk for three years and then decide if there were sufficient transactions to retain the vendor.
