La Plata County will receive a $700,000 state grant for a mill and overlay project on County Road 318.
County funds will match the grant by 50 percent to mill off existing asphalt and lay a 3-inch asphalt mat on a three-mile stretch of the road, starting about a quarter mile west of Colorado Highway 172.
La Plata County Engineer Jim Davis said crews will hopefully begin work next summer and finish within a couple weeks.
The renovations are one of several capital projects for roads and bridges in La Plata County planned for 2016.
Other maintenance plans include a culvert replacement on County Road 141 and renovations to Colorado Highway 172 in Ignacio.
The Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) Division of Local Government is awarding a total of $31.2 million to 32 local governments across the state.
Communities that experience social or economic impacts from development and conversion of minerals and mineral fuels were awarded these funds as part of the Tier II Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Program.
The program is funded by state severance tax on energy and mineral production and a portion of royalties Colorado pays to the federal government for mineral mining and drilling on federal lands.
