On Tuesday, the public will have a chance to provide input and get information about La Plata County's proposed regulations on barking dogs and animal cruelty.

County staff has spent the past year drafting an ordinance to get nuisance dogs in line and address cruelty to animals, working with the La Plata County Humane Society, Sheriff's Office and district attorney.

Under the proposed regulations, an owner who keeps a dog that barks continuously for 20 minutes at any time in a 24-hour period is subject to a written warning on first notice after authorities receive a signed affidavit from a complainant.

The offender would then have 10 days to get his or her dog under control, or invite a citation or summons, which would need an affidavit with at least two complainant signatures.

Complainants would bear the burden of providing evidence of a problem.

The county is also debating the parameters of "dog at large," and whether that definition should apply to dogs on their owner's property.

Animal cruelty code changes would allow animal control officers to seize an animal with probable cause that it is abandoned, neglected, mistreated or otherwise subjected to cruelty.

Questions and feedback will be taken after presentations about the code changes.

Tuesday's open house will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the county administration building at 1101 East Second Ave.
