The La Plata County Suicide Prevention Collaborative will sponsor an eight-week Alternatives to Suicide (Alt2Su) support group from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday beginning April 6 via Zoom.
The group is for suicide-attempt survivors and focuses on connection and relationship-building. The group will provide a safe, nondemanding atmosphere where people can share openly and authentically about their suicidal thoughts and feelings. In contrast to the feeling of isolation leading up to a suicide attempt, Alt2Su offers a timely experience of belonging and being understood.
During groups, participants will share successes and challenges, provide support for one another, strategize and share ideas for coping with difficult life circumstances. People are encouraged to come both in times of strength and challenge.
Meetings are free. To be eligible, each participant must have made one or more suicide attempts, and participants are required to complete an intake interview with the facilitator before attending. The group is facilitated by Megan McCartney, LCSW, and Emma Harmon, peer facilitator.
For more information or to join, contact McCartney at mccartneycounseling@gmail.com.
The group is closed to additional participants once the eight-week cycle begins April 6.
