Boys and girls wrestlers from Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio all battled in regional championships over the weekend, looking to punch their tickets to the state championships with a top-four finish.

At the 3A Region 1 Championships in Gunnison, four Bayfield Wolverines qualified for the state tournament. James Mars won the regional title at 132 pounds for BHS, pinning his first two opponents and then beating Alamosa’s Trevor Maestas 6-2 in the finals.

Keaton Pickering (fourth, 113), Kobe Prior (second, 170) and Jordan Cundiff (third, 285) also qualified for the state championships.

Hunter Mars (fifth, 106) and Deegan Barnes (sixth, 152) also placed for BHS, but just finished outside the top-four.

At the 4A Region 1 Championships in Broomfield, Durango had three wrestlers finish second to qualify, including Ryan Dugan at 106, Jacob Fenberg at 113 and Tyler Woodworth at 160.

Ben Belt lost in the semis at 170, but came back and won his next two matches to place third and qualify.

Cole Pontine just missed the cut, placing fifth at 120.

At 132 and 138, two Demons, Riley Belt and Chris McGrath were both still in the hunt, but will have to win a true-fourth match to advance.

Ignacio also had three wrestlers qualify for state with their performances at the 2A Region 1 Championships in Buena Vista. Jeremy Roderick was Ignacio’s top performer, reaching the finals and placing second to qualify.

Tyler Barnes placed third at 170 and Keaton McCoy placed third at 145 to also qualify for state.

Mancos had two champs, Dillon Eichner (106) and Levi Martin (126), but Isaiah Martinez (third, 113), Ayden Mathews (fourth, 160) Cole Dainty-Guilfoyle (second, 170) and Lane Greenlee (second, 195) also qualified. Trever Paquin also had a chance in a true-fourth match to qualify.

The Durango, Ignacio and Bayfield girls’ wrestling teams all competed at the Region 1 championships at Grand Junction Central. Brooke Fenberg of Durango, however, scored the only top-four finish, Fenberg placed third at 105 pounds.
