A 42-year employee of La Plata Electric Association has been named interim CEO until a permanent replacement for retiring Greg Munro is hired.

Munro’s last day is Aug. 1.

Steve Gregg, currently manager of operations at LPEA, started with the cooperative right out of high school as an equipment operator.

He held various jobs in the operations division, primarily construction and maintenance, until he moved to the engineering department. In engineering, he was a design staker, part of a team that helps design the electrical system.

Six years later, Gregg became involved in right-of-way acquisition.

During a decade in the engineering department, Gregg helped Colorado Ute, the predecessor of Tri-State Generation and Transmission, design and build the major transmission line from the north La Plata County line, through the Animas Valley and around Durango. He also worked on construction of the initial distribution line into the Vallecito area.

In the 1990s, he returned to the operations division as a line superintendent. Munro appointed him manager of operations, his current position, in 2005.

Gregg will remain as interim CEO until he is confident that Munro’s permanent replacement is on solid ground, probably around the end of the year.

Gregg is looking to retire soon himself.

Gregg missed being a native Durangoan by one month. Delta is his birthplace. An avid outdoorsman, he plans to get back to outdoors activities.
