La Plata girl wrestlers reach podium at Alamosa

Wrestlers from Durango, Ignacio and Bayfield all hit the mat Friday at Alamosa’s girls wrestling tournament.

Bayfield’s Brooke Morse and Ignacio’s Faye Hackett led the local contingent with a second-place finishes. Brooke Fenberg led Durango with a third-place finish.

Wrestling at 136 pounds, Morse started the tournament by pinning La Junta’s Maizlynn Hastings in 1:43. In the semis, Morse pinned the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Laural Hughes of Grand Junction Central, in 51 seconds.

And In the championship, Morse squared off with Sage Lechman of West Grand but was unable to keep her win streak going and lost by fall in the second period.

Hackett went 3-1 at 127 pounds to finish second. She beat Durango’s Amiah Hanson with a pin in the third period while sticking her opponents from Olathe and Palmer Ridge in 56 seconds and 49 seconds. Grand Junction Central’s Apolloni Middleton, however, pinned Hackett en route to the title.

Fenberg won her first match by fall against PRHS’ Katelyn Philpot, but was pinned by the eventual champion, Alamosa’s Sarah De La Cerda, in the semis.

Fenberg then squared off in the consolation semifinals with teammate Carly Piccoli, who lost in the first round against Anaiah Guajardo-Zarate of Central, but came back and beat Dolores’ Valentina Tarini 13-2.

Fenberg managed to pin Poccoli in 3:36 and then pinned Central’s Skylar Gallegos in 4:28 to take third.

Lexy Young of Ignacio also competed at 136. Young won her first match by pin, but was pinned in the semis and eliminated in the consolation semis by a major decision.

Ignacio combined forces with Dolores for the tournament, with each team contributing four wrestlers to the lineup. Dolores’ Amanda Dozier went 4-0 to win the 136 B bracket.

Several other local wrestlers competed, but didn’t get their hand raised in Alamosa.

Grand Junction Central scored 141 points to win the tournament, followed by Olathe (78), Alamosa (69), West Grand (28), Bayfield (18), Palmer Ridge (18), Dolores/Ignacio (16), La Junta (14) and Durango (2).
