Lack of offense bites Bayfield

Wolverines wrap as fourth best around the IML

There won’t be a regional tournament for the Bayfield High School girls basketball team.

Centauri defeated the Wolverines 41-30 in the Intermountain League District Tournament third-place game Saturday in Monte Vista.

Centauri (15-6) held a 20-8 lead with 5 minutes, 45 seconds until halftime.

“They had some tough players, so it was a scrapy, physical game,” BHS head coach Bri Simbeck said. “We just couldn’t get our shots to fall and missed a lot of free throws.”

Haley Clarke led the Wolverines with 13 points, while Jaida Ross had seven points, 15 rebounds and 10 steals.

Pagosa Springs, the second-ranked team in the state, defeated Alamosa 40-30 in the IML championship game to remain undefeated.

The Wolverines (7-13) lost five out of their last six games to end the season, but they won one in their postseason tournament.

“Obviously they’re bummed, our seniors especially. We tried to hold onto some of the positive things,” Simbeck said. “Very few teams get to end their season with a win, and unfortunately we weren’t one of them.”
