Igniting after intermission for two 3-pointers and 10 third-quarter points, junior guard Marissa Olguin helped Ignacio grow an intimidating 30-13 halftime lead to 46-25 beginning the fourth and final frame Saturday afternoon and ultimately hammer Crested Butte 51-30 in the Intermountain/Southern Peaks League District Tournament’s girls’ third-place game.

Olguin ultimately finished with three treys and an impressive 17 points inside neutral Bayfield High School, but early on both sides did their greatest damage early from the free-throw line; CBCS went 7-of-9 during the first quarter and Ignacio 8-of-11 as the opening eight minutes ended with the Lady ’Cats ahead 14-9 and the teams having combined for just four field goals.

During the second quarter, the Lady Titans’ fortune disappeared, with only sophomore guard Molly Grace Miller’s two baskets preventing the Southern Peaks Leaguers from being blanked going into halftime. Doing her best to keep Crested Butte in the game, Miller managed eight points during the third quarter and also totaled 17 before fouling out late.

Finishing 7-of-8 from the charity stripe, Crested Butte senior guard Lexi Pickering was held to just one basket, a fourth-quarter trey, and finished with 10 points in defeat.

Under first-year head coach Anna Bressinck, hired less than two months before the season to succeed predecessor Amanda Reynolds, CBCS finished 10-12 overall and out of the 32-team CHSAA Class 3A State Tournament.

Senior center/forward Solymar Cosio booked seven points in helping IHS stop a five-game slide, and senior guard Maci Barnes (4-6 FT) scored eight despite playing with the damaged little finger on her right hand heavily taped to her ring finger.

AFTERMATH: Awarded the No. 22 seed in the Round-of-32, Ignacio (8-13 overall, 3-7 3A/4A IML) will next play at 7 p.m. Friday out in Colorado Springs. The Lady Bobcats’ opponent at Region VI-hosting St. Mary’s will be 11-seed Timnath (16-6 overall).
