Blanked on the scoreboard until freshman Renae Foutz knocked down a midrange jumper with 7:22 remaining in the second eight-minute quarter, the Bayfield Lady Wolverines already trailed Pagosa Springs 23-2 and were simply overwhelmed.

Pagosa went on Saturday to win 66-8.

Forced into a five-second stall violation plus two 10-second backcourt delays almost right away, BHS fell behind 22-0 after the first frame and went back into their locker room at halftime down 40-4. Pagosa then got two 3-pointers and 11 fast points from freshman guard Elizabeth Currier in achieving a 50-point advantage, 54-4, during the third quarter.

Bayfield junior Abria Thayer nailed a three of her own, but PSHS reserve Kylie Ketchum canned one in response, sending the 3A Intermountain League action into the fourth quarter with the Lady Pirates leading 57-7.

Currier paced all players with her 22 points, and was joined in double figures by junior Chantelle Caldwell (13) and freshman Karsyn Shahan (12). Shahan and Currier each finished with three threes, but PSHS (7-2, 1-1 IML) went just 11-of-22 from the free-throw line.

Senior Trista Tully contributed eight points and fellow senior Kori Lucero six.

For the Lady Wolverines (0-10, 0-1), Foutz made one of two fourth-quarter FTs to finish with three points. Thayer ended up with her trey, and senior Abby Tate booked two points – she’d logged 12 in a 65-20 home loss the night before to 2A Monte Vista, powered by senior Chevelle Garcia’s 21 points – while slowed by three fouls.

Bayfield was originally scheduled to host Pagosa Springs on Friday and play at Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday, but both games have been postponed. Pagosa Springs, meanwhile, will travel to Montezuma-Cortez on Friday.

Bayfield also was scheduled to play 4A Durango’s junior varsity on Tuesday, but the game was canceled because of COVID issues.
