I have listened to the banter between our political representatives in America and I am embarrassed for us in the world’s eye. When I hear about hair and gender and old school, I wish they would not insult our public and rise up and speak about the real issues.
I was privileged in the early ’60s to be at West Point when General Douglas MacArthur gave an impromptu speech to the corps of cadets. He spoke about leadership and service to our country. He spoke about duty, honor, country. The old general left us all present with those words burned in our hearts and minds. Those listeners became the leaders of today, and some of the brave went to their graves in Vietnam. I can still hear his voice – duty, honor, country – and feel his commitment.
A tall, quiet man from our past sat on the back of a train and wrote another great speech called the Gettysburg Address, which began with “Four score and seven years ago.” He spoke about rising up and realizing the value of each and every one of us. He was known as “Honest Abe.” I can appreciate and thank our forefathers for the examples they had set for us. If duty, honor, country and honesty are considered “old school,” then I am open to learn more from that school. I would choose Ben Lammons and trust that he represents those values which I would expect in our district attorney.
