Lange plays long for Wolverines

Trey Lange did a bit of everything Friday for the Bayfield Wolverines.

Lange, a senior, started on the mound for Bayfield against Durango’s junior varsity squad in a tournament game in Farmington, N.M. In five innings, Lange struck out 10 Demons and didn’t allow a hit. He did issue four walks, but it didn’t matter much as the Wolverines picked up a 9-0 victory.

Bayfield (3-0) has picked up all three of its wins this season against junior varsity opponents.

Lange also was a force at the plate Friday. He was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and three runs batted in.

“Trey threw a lot of strikes on the mound and had a lot of strikeouts for five innings of work,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “He was just on (Friday). His curve ball was working real good, and he was swinging the bat well, too.”

Most of the Wolverines swung their bats well Friday. Kelton McCoy was 3-for-4 with a double, and Taed Heydinger was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Brody McGhehey also was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Chance Hine went 1-for-1 at the plate with a double and a run scored. Zane Phelps was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

BHS had five doubles in the game.

“Our offense has been carrying us. The defense has been struggling with a lot of errors, and the pitchers have struggled walking some guys,” Qualls said. “We have been scoring, but it was finally a day where we kept the defense on track a little bit better overall.”

Phelps and Adam Ridens each pitched one inning in relief Friday. Ridens gave up one hit and struck out one. Phelps set the Durango side down in order in his inning of work.

But the focus all was on Lange, who established himself as a strong arm in the Bayfield rotation.

“It was really good for him to have a day like this. Last year, he didn’t get a whole lot of pitching time with Clay (Miller) as the ace,” Qualls said. “It was good to get him some confidence early for this year, and I hope he will be a main pitcher for us.”

Bayfield will finish play in the Farmington Invitational junior varsity bracket Saturday afternoon.
