A Rave New World will be held at fairgrounds

Julia Hollingsworth wants you to change your perception about raves, which have the reputation of being all-night (or even dayslong) parties featuring things that one may engage in during all-night (or dayslong) parties that would not be considered fun for the whole family.

The owner of Bayfield-based Mad Hatter Project LLC is throwing an all-ages rave-style party – a laser show and dance featuring local DJs – that’s family friendly; a way, she said, to get everyone to enjoy a summer night out together.

“I think that this is the opportunity where the community that doesn’t go to raves to be able to attend and see what one actually is,” she said. “I want adults and kids to bond, and this is a good way for them to bond because it is energetic and intergenerational.”

Mad Hatter’s event, called A Rave New World, will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. June 10 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds and will feature all the fun of raves: Big lasers, bumping music and lots of glow-in-the-dark stuff. There will be dancers with LED-illuminated hula-hoops, and food vendors, including Fired Up Pizzeria, ice cream and lemonade. For adults, the VFW will also host a beer garden to raise money for a local nonprofit charity.

The night’s music will be provided by DJs Spark Madden, nOOnz, Squoze, Dancing Arrow and Teknique.

And costumes, don’t forget your costume, Hollingsworth said, adding that anything “Alice in Wonderland”-themed would be great, but wear whatever helps you express yourself.

And for the more artistically inclined among us, Hollingsworth is also offering an art gallery for people who want to set up their work on the patio at the fairgrounds.

The Mad Hatter Project is an entertainment company that produces family-friendly events to give everyone some fun, Hollingsworth said. The company has created concerts, a children’s talent contest and other events.

And this rave is going to be huge: Hollingsworth said the space can hold up to 1,000 people, and 400 tickets have already been spoken for. Tables for eight are available for those who want to kickback and people watch.

Tickets are available now online, at the door (with a $5 addition in price), and at Bayfield Blooms in Bayfield and Rocky Mountain High in Durango.
