Michael Thomas and the Fort Lewis College men’s golf team have a lot to think about after a first-round 303 at Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Event No.1 at Hillcrest Golf Club. The Skyhawks are 21 strokes behind the Colorado School of Mines lead and tied with Adams State for last. “They got a couple holes in and started thinking too much,” FLC assistant coach Guy Begay said.

Morgan Miller and the Fort Lewis College men’s golf team are familiar with Hillcrest Golf Club, but it hasn’t helped them at Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Event No. 1. The Skyhawks are tied for last with Adams State at 303 and trail Colorado School of Mines by 21 strokes. “For the most part we didn’t finish our rounds. The course played tougher than it probably should,” FLC head coach Bud Andersen said.

Frost and aftereffects of Sunday’s heavy rain delayed the start of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Event No. 1 by two hours at Hillcrest Golf Club Wednesday.
The Skyhawks shot a 303 as a team in the first round, which tied them for last place with Adams State in the nine-team field.
Colorado School of Mines’ 282 led the first round.
The delay didn’t affect the Fort Lewis College men’s golf team at first.
“They’re hanging in there; they started off hot,” FLC assistant coach Guy Begay said. “They got a couple holes in and started thinking too much.”
Bryan Schlichter shot a 73 to lead FLC, followed by Lucas Laudick’s 75.
Durango High School alumnus Morgan Miller and Michael Thomas scored a 75 and 80, respectively.
Clark Riedberger also shot an 80 for the Skyhawks.
“For the most part, we didn’t finish our rounds. The course played tougher than it probably should,” FLC head coach Bud Andersen said. “We need to be more mentally aware of what’s going on out on the course. We have to make more putts, bottom line that’s been our problem.”
Jordan Arndt of Colorado Mines led the individual leader board after one round with a 69.
Colorado Christian placed second as a team at 290, while Regis was in third with a 293.
The teams were supposed to play two rounds Monday, but the late start forced them to end the second round prematurely because of darkness.
They will finish the second round and play the third round Tuesday.
The first round took about five hours to complete, ending at 4:30 p.m., while players continued to play into the second round to get as many holes in as possible before the sun set. Because of that, players weren’t immediately available for comment and partial second-round scores weren’t immediately available.
Tuesday’s play will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at Hillcrest.
