Law enforcement memorial walk to honor fallen

Vigil to remember officers who died in line of duty
Durango Police Department officers will join members of other law enforcement agencies for the Memorial River Walk on Tuesday to honor officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Area law enforcement will host a memorial river walk Tuesday evening in Durango to honor officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Activities will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. A 2½-mile round-trip Memorial River Walk will start at the paved trail near the Durango Community Recreation Center and proceed south to Rotary Park, where a combined Law Enforcement Honor Guard will hold a vigil as bagpipers play.

Participants will receive small “blue light” flashlights and blue ribbons while supplies last. The gifts were funded by community organizations and Concerns of Police Survivors. Informational posters will be placed along the route.

Organizers ask that those taking part do so with respect as they remember those who lost their lives in the line of duty, including three officers during the past few months in Colorado.

During the walk, Fort Lewis College’s ceremonial cannon will be fired from the college mesa every few minutes for a total of eight times as a salute to eight area officers who have died in the line of duty over the years.

At both ends of the walk, there will be a variety of displays and information stations hosted by Police K-9 Foundation, BlueLight Campaign, Fraternal Order of Police, Shop with a Cop program, Honor Booth and Interface Critical Incident Stress Management Team. Kids’ art and law-enforcement vehicles and equipment also will be on display.

“This is an opportunity for the community to show their support for their law enforcement officers who are part of the community, and is also a chance for officers to interact with the community they serve,” La Plata County Sheriff’s Lt. Ed Aber said in a news release.
